History
The suburb is named after the Earl of Gowrie, otherwise known as Brigadier-General Alexander Gore Arkwright Hore-Ruthven (1872-1955). The Earl of Gowrie was the Governor of south Australia from 1928-34. He was also the Governor of New South Wales from 1935-36 and was the Governor-General from 1936-44.
The suburb name "Gowrie" was gazetted on 5 August 1975
