Charles was a pastoralist and politician; Member of the Commonwealth Board of Trade 1927; Member of House of Representatives 1929-1938; Minister for Markets and for Repatriation, January-April 1932; Minister for Commerce April-September 1932.

The suburb name "Hawker" was gazetted on 15 April 1971
