Ngunnawal was named after the Aboriginal tribe in the local district. The tribe consisted of 500 persons who lived as their ancestors had done for thousands of years, moving across the plains and into the mountain valleys in small groups of 20 to 30 to hunt and camp. Today, there are a number of families identifying Ngunnawal adding up to a total of 1000 people. These families are descendednot only from Ngunnawal with ‘tribal’ names, but also from early European settlers who came to the area after 1820.
The suburb name "Ngunnawal" was gazetted on 18 October 1991
