History
Spence was named after William Guthrie Spence (1846-1926). William Guthrie was a prominent labour leader and was ‘father’ of the Australian Workers’ Union. He was a Member of the First House of Representatives 1901 and was Postmaster-General from 1914-15. William Guthrie was Vice-President of the Executive Council from 1916-17.
The suburb name "Spence" was gazetted on 2 November 1972
