Olympic champion Cathy Freeman selling Brighton mansion with price guide of $6m-$6.6m

The palatial Brighton home owned by renowned Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman has been listed for sale with a price guide of $6 million to $6.6 million.

Michael Hingston, director of Jellis Craig Bayside, is selling the grand five-bedroom French provincial-style house in the popular Melbourne suburb in conjunction with Buxton Real Estate.

Freeman separated from her husband, former cricketer James Murch, in 2024, however the pair continue to co-parent their daughter Ruby, and maintain a professional relationship through Estrella Sports Management, which Murch founded after working as an AFL recruiter.

Freeman became an Aussie legend at the age of 16 after winning gold at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, and went on to greater glory at the 2000 Sydney Olympics by lighting the Olympic cauldron and winning the 400-metres gold medal.

She retired from athletics in 2003, but has continued her philanthropic work through the Cathy Freeman Foundation.

Hingston would not confirm the identity of the vendors, but records show Freeman and Murch purchased the home in November 2021 for $6.8 million.

“It’s a magnificent property built around 10 years ago by renowned Bayside builder McKimm,” he says.

“Most family homes in Brighton offering that sort of land with a basement are typically trading for well over $7 million, so [this] represents exceptional value.”

The expansive home includes a large garage, cinema room and gym at basement level, and a large kitchen with Miele appliances and formal and entertainment areas at ground level, where there’s a heated pool surrounded by landscaped gardens.

The house offers three private suites over two levels, with the top floor main bedroom flowing to a curved balcony, and a second suite and separate lounge-sized retreat currently configured as a fifth bedroom.

“Most of the interest is coming from families that are trading up, from inside and outside the immediate area,” Hingston says. “There’s inquiry from Sydney from buyers who see better value in Melbourne.

“It’s in the premium pocket for central Brighton, and buyers really chase that location for walkability to amenities and to schooling.

“It’s a short stroll to the shops and cafes at Bay Street and Church Street, and only a five minute walk down to Brighton beach.”
