“It was a little 1950s cottage known as the Blue House, which everyone had an affection for, and we had a unique opportunity with a client who had a respect for that,” Barda says.
Retaining the spirit of the original home, while creating a luxury residence that worked for living today, was the brief.
The result is remarkable. Set in The Cutting, one of the city’s prestige oceanfront addresses, the four-bedroom home echoes the original dwelling in tone, while the sculptural copper curved roof, a Barda signature, signals the house is very much a modern beachside abode.
“You almost feel like you are standing on a ship’s deck,” says Barda of the home’s upper main living level, which has views across Bronte Beach and north to Bondi.
Coming through the front door, the view is captured by floor-to-ceiling Italian glass doors on two sides. The kitchen floats above the living and dining area.
Double-glazing and hydronic heating make it comfortable year round, but it will be in summer that this beach pad really shines – no more so than on the vast terrace.
While the view may blow you away, there is beauty throughout.

The curving staircase to the lower level is a case in point. It leads to three bedrooms, a bedroom/guest/nanny accommodation, office and cellar.
The jewel is the master bedroom, with its views, deck access and en suite with artisanal tiling.
The Bronte Road property is for sale with a price guide of $20 million through Pauline Goodyer, of Goodyer Real Estate.
