A neglected Victorian-era terrace with peeling paint, cracked walls and an overgrown backyard has been listed for sale and is attracting a lot of interest from potential buyers ready to roll up their sleeves and tackle a renovation.

The three-bedroom home in Sydney’s Darlinghurst, held by the same family for close to a century, has sat empty for decades, but the fixer-upper is now on the market with a price guide of $2.2 million.

“It’s a blank canvas, which is pretty exciting for a lot of people to put their own touch on something,” says agent Alexander Smith of Sydney Sotheby’s International Realty.

The abandoned property retains period details such as high ceilings and ornate fireplaces.

A bedroom on the ground floor looks out to the front garden, and there’s a separate living room that leads to the dining area and kitchen. Upstairs are two more bedrooms, one with a fireplace and the other with built-in wardrobes.

Smith says original terraces don’t come up that often, and “we’ve already got a bit of interest, so it could be sold before [the auction]”.

Also driving interest is the prime location: Darlinghurst is an affluent enclave just three kilometres east of Sydney’s CBD.

“You’re walking distance from the city,” Smith says. “You’re so close to Potts Point, Elizabeth Bay, all the shops, restaurants, and great access to transport.”

The price guide of $2.2 million is below Darlinghurst’s median house price, which is $2.85 million according to the latest Domain House Price Report.

Properties like these “come up every 80 years, then they’re snapped up very quickly”, Smith says.

The auction for 194 Barcom Avenue is on Saturday, March 28 at 11.45am.
