16th-century cave cottage hits the market with $1m price guide

A secluded cave house that dates back to the 16th century has hit the market in the UK.

The unique three-bedroom cottage was originally carved into a sandstone cave in the countryside of Wolverley, Worcestershire, in the West Midlands area of England.

Known as Rock Cottage, the property dates back to 1511 and has been somewhat updated with a traditional 18th-century frontage, according to the listing.

It has four interconnected levels, with exposed beams and a wood-burning stove a feature of the living room. 

The main bedroom, with an ensuite, is in the roof space of the home.

There’s a guest bedroom on the floor below which overlooks a valley.

The third bedroom is tucked inside the cave.

The property listing suggests this space is “ideal as a study or private guest retreat”.

The cottage has two bathrooms, both fitted with showers, a toilet and wash basins.

The property is set on just over 1 hectare of landscaped gardens.

As well as the main house, there is also a detached timber lodge with an indoor hot tub. 

The one-of-a-kind property has been in the same family for more than 60 years.

“Acquired by the current owner’s grandfather in 1963, a decorated World War I veteran, the house has been lovingly maintained and improved over decades,” the listing reads. 

“The gardens, in particular, were transformed into the extraordinary landscaped oasis seen today, reflecting decades of care, craftsmanship, and horticultural knowledge.”

Rock Cottage is on the market through Town and Country Property Auctions.

It’s set to go under the hammer on 11 March 2026. It has a price guide of £525,000 ($1 million).
