Couple spent three years building their forever home, now they're moving on

Becky and Francisco Smout are moving on from the six-bedroom mansion they had one day hoped to call their “forever home”.

The husband-and-wife duo behind boutique property developers Smout Property spent the past three years transforming the once pre-war home in Brisbane’s inner city New Farm.

Of the three years, 12 months were spent working with Brisbane City Council on development approval, while the remaining two years were spent on the build.

The couple have more than 15 years of developing experience together, with Becky focused on interiors and Francisco driving construction.

“I always had an urge to do something creative,” the former school teacher turned design specialist told Domain. “We worked out to be the perfect team.”

Known as Corazón – the Spanish word for heart – the property’s name says everything.

What began as an old Queenslander on an 810-square-metre block is now a three-level trophy home with six bedrooms and eight bathrooms across 963 square metres of living space.

Conceived as a “living work of art”, the residence features a double helix spiral staircase, a solid marble travertine bathtub carved from a single block and a skylit primary wing immersed in hanging gardens.

The property also boasts a children’s wing, complete with a climbing wall and suspended net cubby, alongside a wellness retreat featuring an ice bath, a hot spa and a heated magnesium naked pool.

The high-end features continue with facial recognition entry, perimeter cameras and a comprehensive internal and external alarm system. 

Despite hoping to stay in the home for longer as their “forever home”, the Smouts are moving on.
