Guest Suite turns sour for one team this week. Photo: Nine

It’s Guest Suite week on The Block! We all love having friends and family and live-in enemies, but since the dawn of time, we’ve always struggled with the conundrum of where to store our friends and family when we’re not using them.

Unlike an ancient, slightly problematic edition of Trivial Pursuit, or mouldy Christmas decorations, or the Peloton you impulse-bought, you can’t just shove your guests up in the attic until it’s time to play with them again.

And thus the guest suite was invented.

This episode also marks the momentous occasion of being halfway through this season of The Block – and as a result, the judges are getting even more judgey. They’re starting to identify patterns in the contestants’ styling and building – such as Chantel and Wyatt’s commitment to bland and beige, Courtney and Sev’s commitment to overspending, and Tayla’s commitment to chaos.

It’s also long enough to see the strategy some teams are playing with: not everyone is going for the room reveal victory each time, instead focusing on budgeting wins or playing for the long term.

Time will tell if this is a successful strategy – but in the meantime, we get to watch the judges lose their minds.

The Block Guest Suite reveals: Judges’ scores and comments

House 1: Adam and Jolene

Coming off the high of their win last week, Adam and Jolene were strategic with their guest suite – taking the risk of investing in some colour. In a guest suite? Revolutionary.

“I want people to walk in and be like ‘wow, this is different to House 2,’ ” said Jolene.

And their gambit of a blush pink and maroon colour scheme, as well as a bold Grafico wallpaper, luckily pays off, with Shaynna immediately exclaiming “Ooh colour, look at this!” about the guest bedroom.

“Love to see some colour,” adds Darren. “Something that’s not quite so beige and neutral.”

The pink birds on the wall are 'twee' – but the carnations bring a grandma vibe into the room. Photo: Nine

But while the colour drew the judges’ attention, it was the subtle way they used it that pleased them most.

“They’re really good with their tones, aren’t they,” says Marty.

“They’ve really listened to pairing back some styling, this is modern simplicity with lots of colour,” agrees Darren.

There were a couple of quibbles, though – Darren wants a rug and Shaynna wants the wardrobe to utilise its space more. She also finds the combo of the carnations in a vase along with the pink ceramic birds on the wall a little “nanna”. But ultimately they adore the high level of execution and craftsmanship.

In the bathroom, they love the colour scheme, which continues the story with the tiles.

“I think all of the colour in here is really the right level and right palette,” says Darren.

However, some small details, such as four different colours of metal and some messy painting, turned it into what Marty describes as a “good room, but not amazing”.

House 2: Chantel and Wyatt

It’s another week of Chantel and Wyatt boasting about finishing before everyone else, with their guest suite essentially finished before Saturday. I guess you don’t get super ripped without being competitive first.

However, it’s halfway through the competition and Chantel and Wyatt are the only team to have never won a room reveal – and they know it’s because the judges don’t love their commitment to white on white on white.

“Even though they want me to include colours, I’m never going to,” Chantel says defiantly, committing to continue to “strive for beige”.

But interestingly, this goes beyond stubbornness – Chantel and Wyatt have talked about aiming for a cohesive house with their beige colour scheme, hoping it will appeal to buyers, if not the judges. They’ve also been angling for the Commbank budget wins as a way of increasing their budget – which has paid off with multiple wins so far.

But this week the judges weren’t entirely hostile to their colour scheme, with Shaynna enjoying the “different types of neutrals on top of each other” and “gorgeous texture”. Their guest bedroom softened the starkness of multiple whites by using layering and texture, including Venetian plaster and a luxurious bedhead.

“A clever combination of traditional and contemporary,” says Darren, while Marty adds “it feels like you’re in a space where you just want to go to sleep, which is great.”

However, the en suite once again brought out the regular criticisms Chantel and Wyatt usually get from the judges, with Marty saying the room wasn’t offensive, but it was “a bit plain”.

“It feels like a display home in a development. It’s copy-paste,” dismisses Shaynna.

Beyond this, the judges don’t like how tight the shower is, compared to House 1.

'Feels like a display home,' says Shaynna. Photo: Nine

They have strong feelings about Chantel and Wyatt’s risky beige strategy.

“I’m never going to give them a 10, because for me, in my calculations, human connection to a space is part of my judging process, and I feel a lack of human connection in every room I walk into that they’ve done,” explains Shaynna.

But Marty thinks it could potentially pay off. “There’s two ends of the spectrum here, they’re not gonna win a room but they will win The Block, or it will all fall flat on its face because it’s too plain.”

House 3: Lisa and Rosco

Lisa and Rosco entered Guest Suite Week with a lot of trepidation – they’ve famously struggled through every other week involving a bathroom.

Unfortunately, the week almost immediately put up a bathroom hurdle for them, with their glazier not only delivering their glass late – but informing them that he couldn’t stay to install it.

“All good,” responded Rosco, much to Lisa’s annoyance. “It’s not all good!” she yelled repeatedly.

Luckily, the rest of The Block rallied, and tradie Trent from House 2 came over to help install the glass.

Upon entering the guest bedroom, the judges note the first study that they’ve seen in any design yet, with Lisa and Rosco devoting part of the room to a study nook. However, this isn’t necessarily in their favour.

“Nup, studies are done,” says Marty. “You’re not gonna sit there and do your GST returns are you?”

'Feels like a bad hotel' according to Shaynna. Photo: Nine

The judges decide the study nook would have been better used to fix the “pitiful” amount of storage.

Unfortunately, the judges are not impressed with their bedroom, despite liking some elements, including the curtains and the ceiling.

“Nothing bad or offensive, but nothing innovative or defining,” says Darren, with Shaynna adding it’s “very basic 101 styling”, and “feels like a bad hotel”.

“They’ve done OK, but OK isn’t good enough at this price point,” summarises Marty.

However, things change dramatically in the bathroom, with the judges adoring the tiles and “the best vanity we’ve seen today”.

“All of it is heaven,” Darren gushes.

“This would be my first 10,” says Marty. “Can’t fault it.”

If they’d managed to match the bedroom with this, the judges reckon it could have been a perfect score.

House 4: Courtney and Sev

After a couple of lacklustre weeks, Courtney and Sev entered Guest Suite Week with their trademark ambition and scope – deciding to change the room layout again, and include a full kitchenette in their bedroom.

They also suffered some setbacks, with their tiling having to be completely removed and started again.

The judges were excited by the prospect of cheese. Photo: Nine

But it didn’t matter – the judges are immediately pleased by Courtney and Sev’s trademark attention to detail, including a wine and cheese tray on the bed, welcoming them into the space.

Marty loves the amenities in the kitchenette – including the fridge, toaster and coffee machine. Unlike some of the other rooms, this hasn’t come at the expense of storage either. This is possible because of how they re-jigged the floor plan and moved the door to a different part of the room.

The amenities of the kitchenette are a big draw card for the room. Photo: Nine

One of the heroes of the room is the “phenomenal” bedhead, made with Grafico wallpaper.

“It looks so expensive,” marvels Darren. “It feels like grasscloth paper, but it’s vinyl wallpaper.”

The custom bedhead blew the judges away. Photo: Nine

The judges not only love this room, but they also prefer it to the main bedroom the girls delivered a few weeks ago. “The quality is just next level,” says Marty, with Shaynna saying it was the first room of the day “that feels like I could live here”.

“Very hard to fault from what it offers,” says Darren. “It feels luxurious, like a hotel suite.”

The praise continued into the en suite, with the Beaumont tiles drawing praise from all the judges. “How pretty, this just feels like it glistens,” says Shaynna.

Judges loved the bathroom too. Photo: Nine

The judges love it all, highlighting the amazing mood lighting, storage, incredible stone, towel rails, toilet, tapware, and the roomy shower. Shaynna focuses on the basin, the curves, and the signature sconces.

“I’m so happy, this room has it all,” says Marty.

House 5: Rick and Tayla

When you’ve built a career around recapping reality TV as I have, you quickly learn to identify two things: the disappointment of your parents, and when a contestant is being set up to fail, for our amusement. Both of these things happened tonight, but we’ll focus on Tayla today – OK Mum?

With Rick still out of action thanks to his infected knee, it was Tayla’s turn to run the show. She was given a surrogate dad in the form of former contestant Spence Thomson, from the 2018 season, who came on board to help her out. But it was still Tayla calling the shots – and we were treated with multiple clips throughout the week of her saying that she’s “going to make her dad proud” and “show him what she’s made of”.

Unfortunately, I know enough about reality TV to know she’s in danger.

She also brought in her twin sister to help out – two Taylas on the show must have been a very specific nightmare brought to life for some people.

For her Guest Suite, Tayla has stayed true to form by taking some big swings – notably a green Grafico feature wall which she describes as “stunning, but it is out there”. She also planned to put an air-fryer into her kitchenette nook, but was later talked out of it.

Darren initially tries to be balanced, saying that “some of the separate things are good”, noting the lighting and the general layout.

However, Marty sums up the overall sentiment: “This is terrible”.

One glaring issue is putting a barn door as the entrance to the guest bedroom. “Why have they put in a barn door with this kind of external architecture?”

But most of the criticism was directed towards Tayla’s styling.

“This is not sophisticated, this is not high end, we could be in Greece,” says Shaynna, referring to the scattering of knick-knacks around the room.

A room which managed to make the judges almost die of laughter. Photo: Nine

The judges begin pointing out more and more inscrutable choices – a doona which looks like carpet, a mirror leaning against curtains, an outdoor chair at the desk, a random bottle of wine on the bedside table, a spontaneous book about air fryers, and a lonely pot plant in the corner.

By the time they spot a pot plant living under the desk, Shaynna completely loses it, literally in tears from laughter.

“Every week I say don’t put a plant in the corner, and they put a plant under the desk,” she sobs. Soon the other judges are laughing with her – it’s actually quite a joyous experience, if you ignore Tayla looking very annoyed the whole time.

“It’s unsellable,” announces Marty.

A toilet for anyone who loves the spotlight. Photo: Nine

Over in the bathroom, there’s less merriment and more to like, with the judges adoring the green marble and tile choices. However, as they look closer, they realise that there are more inscrutable choices here, too.

“Oh wait, the whole thing is cooked,” Marty realises, as Shaynna discovers the lighting positions, which include a spotlight on whoever is using the toilet.

Marty is really worried about how Tayla and Rick will sell the house with the current styling.

“We’re worried about their house, worried about their sale, and we’re worried that they’re not going to go in the right direction moving forward,” Shaynna says.
