Sole survivor of a demolished village hits the market

The last surviving home in this abandoned village sits alone among empty streets and now it’s looking for a new owner for just £35,000 ($66,688)

Set in the former mining village of Troedrhiwfuwch in south Wales, the home is one of only two buildings still standing after the rest of the village was demolished decades ago.

Once home to more than 600 residents, the hillside community was gradually cleared after fears that the mountain looming behind it was unstable.

By the 1980s, landslide concerns had escalated to the point where almost the entire village of about 93 homes, along with its school, pub, shops and chapel, was bulldozed.

But for some unknown reason, this house remained while everything else was cleared.

“It’s a vastly overused word, but this is a truly unique sale,” auctioneer Sean Roper of Paul Fosh Auctions told The Sun.

“Why this otherwise ordinary three-bedroom house survived while all the others didn’t remains a bit of a mystery.”

“It’s a curious and poignant link to another age,” Roper added.

Today, the property sits alone, joined only by the village’s former post office and a war memorial marking the once lively community.

Despite its unusual setting, the house itself is straightforward: two living areas, a kitchen and bathroom downstairs, three bedrooms upstairs, plus a front garden and rear sheds.

The listing describes it as an opportunity for either a home or an investment, with agents estimating it could fetch about £900 ($1,714) a month in rent once fixed up.

“The property was once part of a bustling village with over 600 occupants, but by the 1980s many had left the village and now this is the only remaining property other than the former post office,” the listing explains.

“The property is surrounded by wonderful countryside and has stunning views to the front and rear.”
