How Unley Park, a suburb five kilometres south of the Adelaide CBD, got its name is a mystery – it could be the title of its very own page turner. Most likely, it was named by settler Thomas Whistler, who, nostalgic for his Suffolk, UK, roots in the 1830s, referenced Undley Common and somehow the “d” evaporated in the local vernacular.

Compounding the enigma, there is no actual Unley Park – although there is no shortage of green space.

The suburb’s appeal holds no such mystery – think leafy streets with majestic river red gums, oaks and cedars, and grand heritage homes, many in the Tudor revival style, teamed with a vibrant cafe culture.

A hop, skip, and a jump from Rundle Mall, the bounties of the CBD are at hand. But there’s plenty on the doorstep, too. For recreation, Heywood Park is home to the last remaining grey box gums on the Adelaide plains, some of which pre-date European settlement.

Beneath their imposing canopies, the park allows dogs off-leash from 5pm to 10am, and there’s even a mini ninja play space, aka an obstacle course, for tweens ages 10 to 14.

Beside the main shopping centre, the Soldiers Memorial Gardens, complete with an old-style octagonal timber band rotunda, is more reflective. And, if New York has its High Line, Unley has the Linear Reserve, a 1-kilometre trail meandering along what was once a concrete drain, lushly flanked by around 15,000 indigenous plants.

For those who want to forsake solid ground, there’s TreeClimb Adelaide, an aerial adventure park, with rock climbing and zip-lines where you can practise jungle calls on the Tarzan swing.

More sedately, the Unley Museum is receiving a makeover – already a community hub, it will re-emerge next year with its own on-trend acronym, UMAG (Unley Museum and Galleries).

At an even slower pace, “Opulence meets serenity” at the Temple Day Spa, which claims to be Adelaide’s only five-star day spa and where Adelaiders travel from afar for its signature Rainforest Ritual treatment.

When it comes to eats, there’s nothing parochial about this pocket – you can venture across the planet with cosmopolitan options such as the Elliniko Greek eatery (from mouthwatering moussaka to mesmerising meze), while Taprobane (the old name for Sri Lanka) evokes the soul of that island in the Indian Ocean. Think authentic sambals and curries in a moody space that could be old Colombo.

Inspiration comes from a vastly different source at the Dolly cocktail bar, which is causing a stir. Paninis and pastries by day morph into cocktails by night at a concrete bar under a slick, shiny ceiling. The bold and the beautiful can order The Parton, a zingy nod to the bar’s musical namesake.

Similarly, out there, Pickle in the Middle, with its “plant-forward” menu, serves breakfast and lunch, along with its famed jarred pickles, in a light, breezy space with funky, oversized lights and bursts of sunshine yellow on the walls. Equally relaxed is the Whistle & Flute Cafe, while A Mother’s Milk makes an occasion of all-day breakfasts, with its “comfort food and community spirit”, a tasty testament to this cosy suburb.

Who’s looking in Unley Park, and what are they looking for?

With Nick Pelvay of Fox Real Estate

Unley Park attracts predominantly families and long-term owner-occupiers looking to upgrade within the suburb or move from neighbouring blue-chip Malvern, Hyde Park and Parkside. There is also a consistent flow of buyers from the Adelaide Hills for schooling at Scotch College or Walford, along with interstate interest, with buyers seeing comparative value. Buyers are looking for larger properties with presence, character homes, particularly villas, ripe for renovation. A north-facing rear is consistently mentioned, along with natural light, multiple living areas, and connectivity to outdoor spaces. Pools, established gardens and quality entertaining areas are musts. Proximity to schools, Unley Road and King William Road also come up regularly.

Hand-crafted in the 1920s, this handsome landmark residence is a classic iteration of the Tudor revival style, so popular in Unley Park during this period. Baronial in both proportions and spirit, it has a stone-and-half-timbered, rendered facade with steep gables, and interiors with timber panelling, decorative plasterwork, a carved fireplace, leadlights and ironwork, all lovingly preserved. But it also offers plenty of opportunity for those who want to give it a modern twist while honouring its past.
