For most Canberrans, the suburb of O’Malley is defined by one home – the monolithic white palace that belongs to legendary Canberra property developer Sotiria Liangis. You can’t help but notice it as you commute down Hindmarsh Drive – 30 one-tonne Corinthian columns are hard to miss.
It stands guard, if you like, over one of Canberra’s most exclusive suburbs, just as the two three-tonne stone lions, imported from China, stand guard outside her own front door.

Perhaps it’s doing a good job, as few of us have reason to enter O’Malley. There are no shops, no schools, and its population is fewer than 1000. If you don’t live there, the only reason to explore the suburb might be to have a bit of a stickybeak at the grand homes and embassies on every corner.
But according to Belle Property Canberra’s Oumaya Escribe, this exclusivity is part of what makes O’Malley so special.
“There’s very little through-traffic or commercial activity, so it has this incredibly peaceful, private residential feel, yet you’re only minutes from Mawson, Woden, Canberra Hospital, great schools and the Inner South,” she says.

“Some of the homes can certainly appear grand or even a little intimidating from the street, but behind the gates they’re very much family homes. You have large blocks, multiple living areas, beautiful gardens, pools and room for children to grow.
“What sets O’Malley apart is that you can have genuine space, privacy and an outlook while still being incredibly central. It almost feels like you’re removed from Canberra without actually leaving it, and that’s becoming increasingly difficult to find.”
She says the O’Malley market sets its own pace too.

“There’s such a diverse mix of homes in terms of size, architecture, age and quality, so buyers tend to assess each property individually rather than simply comparing price per square metre,” she says.
“Families are wanting more space, established buyers are looking for their long-term home, interstate or international buyers are relocating to Canberra and, of course, there are people connected to the diplomatic community.”

Best Eats
Asteri, in nearby Swinger Hill, would have to be one of my favourite restaurants close to O’Malley. With beautiful Greek food, a relaxed atmosphere and that lovely family feel, it’s the kind of place that’s perfect for a long lunch or dinner.
Coffee fix
Fox & Bow in Farrer is my go-to for a great coffee, and it’s only a few minutes from O’Malley. It has such a relaxed neighbourhood atmosphere and serves consistently excellent coffee.
Hidden Gem
There are beautiful reserves, walking trails and pockets where you feel completely removed from the city despite being so centrally located. I think people are often surprised by just how peaceful it is.

On one of O’Malley’s most tightly held streets, this grand dual-level residence sits on an expansive 2222 square metre block. Currently configured as a professional office with multiple generous rooms, the versatile floor plan could equally be transformed into a substantial family residence, multigenerational home or perhaps something entirely new. With established gardens, abundant parking and a peaceful leafy outlook, this is a rare opportunity.

This seven-bedroom home is majestic yet homely. It’s been stylishly renovated with family living in mind, offering areas to relax, unwind and entertain across two levels. The stunning kitchen features a walk-in pantry and premium appliances, opening onto a family room and large al fresco area. Two of the upstairs main bedrooms have en suites, and one opens onto a dedicated office space.
