Suburb History


Isabella Maria Brisbane (1821-1849) was the daughter of Sir Thomas Brisbane, Governor of New South Wales from 1821-1825. The area of Isabella Plains was founded by Captain Mark Currie, Major John Ovens and Joseph Wild who camped near the site of the present Tuggeranong Homestead and named the area Isabella’s Plain, in honour of Governor Brisbane’s infant daughter. The three men were on a government expedition to find good grazing land and extend the limits of Civilisation.
