The Bangalow home of interior designer and author Natalie Walton has been the backdrop of countless treasured family memories.

Walton, Rollston and their four children have spent the past seven years renovating a farmhouse just outside the historic town of Bangalow.

“More than any other place we have lived, this place has felt like home,” says Walton.

Walton travels the world visiting homes and writing books about authentic spaces and the people who live in them.

On her first visit to her Bangalow home, she knew it was special.

“The moment we walked in, we were struck by the high ceilings, exposed timber beams, and the way the house was designed to make the most of the outlook from every room.

“The northerly aspect, timber doors and windows, floorboards, and the view sealed the deal,” says Walton.

The home is a perfect vantage point to experience and appreciate the natural world, one of Walton’s favourite aspects of living here.

“From almost every window and door we get to look out onto a tree-lined landscape,” she says. “And as we make our morning coffee, we can look out of the kitchen window to see mist rolling over the hills.

“In the afternoons, we enjoy spectacular sunsets and watch the sun going down over the horizon. There have been many times we’ve seen double rainbows from our kitchen deck.”

Since they moved in, the creative family has made the home their own: painting the interior white, refinishing the floors, reconfiguring rooms and adding custom Tasmanian oak storage.

“Painting the walls and ceilings instantly transformed the home, and really opened it up, making it feel lighter, brighter and more open,” says Walton.

“I believe in honouring the architecture of the home, so we retained its country charm, while introducing contemporary details for modern living.”

The couple’s restoration of a former shed on the property is a testament to their mindful approach to renovation, using reclaimed, natural and sustainable materials throughout.

Over the years, the space has served as an office, photo studio, guest suite, and bedroom.

Walton says it was a bittersweet decision to move on from this home.

“We have gone back and forth on the decision for a couple of years because we love living here so much. But after seven wonderful years, we feel ready for a new chapter.”

She cites the changing needs of her family as a key driver of the sale.

“Our eldest son is now in his last year of school and preparing for the next stage of his life,” Walton says.

“After recently selling our homewares business too, this next step feels like a way to clean the slate for what’s next.”

She and Rollston are hoping to find “a new house project” and have time to travel.

“But mostly, we want to be there for our children and support them as they pursue their passions and interests,” she says.
