Wind back the clock at Lorinna, a 175-year-old Tasmanian homestead

November 13, 2025

Time has stood still at this handsome, 175-year-old homestead in the historic Tasmanian town of Evandale.

Built in 1850 and named Lorinna, it is one of the best examples of a period house in an area known for its well-preserved Georgian roots.

“Evandale is one of Australia’s intact and important Georgian villages, and this property would probably be in the top 10 in the town, because there are quite a number of beautiful historic houses,” says agent Dominic Romeo, of Dominic Romeo Historic Property.

The Tasmanian homestead known as Lorinna was built in 1850.

The price guide is in the region of $2.3 million to $2.4 million, he says.

The estate has been respectfully restored, and an extension sympathetically added, by a vendor who understands the essential details of heritage design.

The home is true to its origins and styled to invite prospective buyers to wind back the clock and experience an era when homes were elegant.

A soaring timber-lined ceiling, crowned by a skylight, bathes the living room in natural light. A formal drawing room is deeply romantic, graced by rich wallpaper, a chandelier, a fireplace and detailed cornices. Both connect to shaded terraces.

Romeo says the timber work is a highlight.

“It’s got an incredibly English feel about it,” he says. “There is a consensus that it has classic design and a sense of space.

“A lot of the architectural features are still intact. The vendor of the property is quite a well-known interior designer, and she’s got huge experience in restoring and working with Georgian and historic interiors.”

The atmosphere of the grand living room, which is 10 metres long and seven metres wide, is warm and welcoming, Romeo says. “It is a huge room, but it is incredibly cosy.”

When it comes to historic properties, the gardens are as important as the houses themselves, he says, and this property has 2000 square metres of impeccable landscaping.

“These houses came with a large number of acres when they were first built, and obviously, over the years, subdivisions occur,” Romeo says. “These houses would have had large, important grounds around them. And this one has got some beautiful established trees.”

Romeo anticipates the buyer will be from the mainland.

“My strongest market is Queensland and NSW,” he says. “I believe it will be a mainlander and could possibly be someone looking for a weekender or a short-term sort of stay rather than a property they would live in full-time.

The estate has been respectfully restored.

“I’m dealing with a lot of people who are moving to Tasmania on a full-time basis. All of the people I deal with are heritage purists looking for early historic houses.”

Evandale is in the island’s north, about a two-hour drive from Hobart and only 17 minutes from Launceston. The town is known for its time-honoured streetscapes, vineyards, distilleries, the Sunday country market, the National Penny Farthing Championship, and the prestigious Glover Art Prize for Tasmanian landscape painters.
