A curved home built by local stonemasons and inspired by famed mid-century architect Frank Lloyd Wright has hit the market in Melbourne’s Yarra Valley.

The property at 111 Badger Weir Road is an unabashed homage to Wright’s final residential design, Circular Sun House, in the desert mountains of Phoenix, Arizona.

Coomalie, as the four-bedroom home on 1.78 hectares is known, is in far lusher surroundings in Badger Creek, and adjoins the Yarra Ranges National Park, just over 50 kilometres north-east of Melbourne.

Selling agent Gerard Kennan from Castran says the owners wanted to ensure the three-level property integrated harmoniously into the natural surroundings.

Entry to the home is via an elevated concrete bridge built over Coranderrk Creek.

It creates such a sense of arrival, then winding down through tranquil bush and appearing at this stone masterpiece, it’s really very special,” Kennan says.

In the 1980s, the owner’s in-laws first cleared some of the vacant land and construction took “many years”.

Local stonemasons had to split individual blocks to fit them perfectly into the curved structure’s facade.

There’s plenty of natural materials inside, too, with exposed stone walls, flagstone floors, jarrah joinery and salvaged timbers featured throughout.

There’s also a separate self-contained studio on the property.

More aesthetically sympathetic updates have been made over the past decade, and the home has served as a residence, an Airbnb, and a venue for private events, including classical music concerts and weddings.

“There’s a lot of creative genius in how this very unique home evolved into a finished product,” he says.

The property at 111  Badger Weir Road has an asking price of $2.3 million to $2.6 million. Expressions of interest close at 2pm on Tuesday, December 16.
