Every dinner party needs a conversation starter, and a feature in this three-bedroom home in the Far North Queensland town of Garners Beach will certainly get people talking.

When stepping through the front door of 50 Holt Road, Garners Beach, the six-metre-high ceiling immediately draws your gaze upwards to a colourful patchwork of 30 artworks and a large hanging whale sculpture.

Listing agent Tania Steel of Tropical Property, says the reaction from prospective buyers has typically been one of surprise.

“Oh my god, there’s a whale in the lounge room suspended from the ceiling,” is what they usually say.

Stairway landings that lead to bedrooms and double as viewing platforms sit at either end of the living-dining-kitchen space.

While you’d be tempted to let your eye linger on any one of the paintings on the ceiling, there’s a visual and creative feast to be had elsewhere in this light-filled property by the sea.

At one end of the large room, a large zebra artwork brings a touch of modernism to the space, which has white walls and timber floors.

At the other end, a yellow bookshelf adds another pop of colour in the media room.

Steel says the current owners inherited the art when they bought the custom build.

They’re reluctantly selling the property due to overseas commitments, but have loved the tranquillity and funk of the property they call Sails.

The living spaces have floor-to-ceiling windows which create a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor, and you can watch the sun rise from almost every room.

A timber deck wraps around the entire home, and you can enjoy views of the surrounding tropical rainforest from the pool and covered outdoor dining area.

“It’s a beautiful, vibrant, colourful house.”
