Just 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Byron Bay you’ll find the serene and secluded Damia, set on 50 hectares of lush hinterland in Coopers Shoot. With a long history as a rural working farm, the private estate now holds a functioning macadamia orchard featuring 4500 trees and prides itself on its dedication to regeneration work around the property.
Rolling countryside views are grounded by a Mediterranean-inspired homestead and two guesthouses, featuring six bedrooms and eight bathrooms between the two. Hybrid indoor-outdoor retreat areas embrace the subtropic Byron climate, and you’ll find earthy tones like warm timber and terracotta accents throughout its rustic interiors.
A stay at Damia feels like a long exhalation. It’s all about slow-paced living, designed for reconnection of all kinds: with oneself, friends and nature. “The layout makes it easy for groups to gather together in communal spaces or retreat to quiet corners for privacy,” says property manager Lauren Tamayo.
Grand sliding doors open onto a 15-metre mineral infinity pool and heated spa with a vista of never-ending green. They are set in a gated dining area complete with a Portuguese pig oven and large gathering table, allowing for seamless transition from swim to supper prepped by a private in-house chef.
Mostly off-grid, Damia generates nearly all its electricity via 155 solar panels. It also harvests rainwater for drinking and showers through an advanced filtration system. Meanwhile, passive solar principles regulate indoor temperatures year-round.
Beyond its impressive architectural form and relaxed lifestyle, Damia has a strong focus on restoring its natural surroundings. In tandem with Booyong Rainforest Creation, it’s committed to rewilding four dedicated zones back to their original rainforest state, covering approximately 14 hectares.
“Over the past five years, Booyong Rainforest Creation has reintroduced around 150 species of native flora, responsibly planting more than 10,000 trees,” Tamayo explains. “This regeneration work helps revive the landscape, create wildlife corridors and offer guests an authentic rainforest experience alongside our working farm.”
A highly rewarding endeavour, the team has already discovered five natural springs and three waterfalls on-site. It has also introduced 10 nest boxes and 500 koala food trees to the on-site koala sanctuary.
Walking tracks splice regenerated bushland and orchard, making it easy for guests to get their morning steps up or meander with a drink in hand at golden hour. You might even spot Damia’s farmer, Sam, on the tractor during harvest season. From March to September, guests are welcome to forage for macadamias and crack them open fresh, ready to savour.
If you’re ready to look inward after venturing out, head over to Damia’s original horse stables, now reimagined as a rustic fitness centre overlooking the hills and coastline. It’s equipped with Technogym gear, a reformer machine, an infrared sauna and an ice bath. (Book a private Pilates class or personal training session.) There’s even an in-ground trampoline, a courtyard with an Argentinian parrilla grill and an outdoor cinema for twilight movies.
Round out the day with an all-terrain vehicle trip down to the fishing shack. You’ll find a private dam, kayaks and an outdoor firepit for a lakeside sunset soiree.
