Nothing beats the tranquillity of a beautifully designed main bedroom. Over 21 seasons of The Block, bedrooms have inspired and shocked judges: sometimes at the same time. We asked the Block judges for their standouts.

Kristian and Mimi (Phillip Island, 2024)

Stepping into Kristian and Mimi’s main bedroom, Shaynna was floored: “This takes my breath away.”

Judges loved the wavy bedhead, sourced from former winner Steph and Gian’s Japandi Estate. The bedside tables, overall colour scheme and raked sheer curtains also went down well.

The artwork was described as “gobsmackingly beautiful”, but pales in comparison to the Gucci dress hanging in the Kinsman wardrobe – won in a challenge by the duo.

Kylie and Brad (Phillip Island, 2024)

There’s so much to love about this main bedroom by Kylie and Brad.

Darren likened the walk-in wardrobe as being “like walking into a jewellery box”, with the room ultimately winning bedroom week for the couple.

The two showed plenty of creativity and imagination, using metallic wallpaper which judge Marty loved: he called it a risky but unique choice.

He described it, essentially, as a marketable room that could bring buyers in: “This is the house that has that quirkiness to it, but now they’re nailing the materiality.”

Steph and Gian (Hampton East, 2023)

A formal, monochromatic space filled with luxurious materials, organic forms, and inspired lighting combined to create Steph and Gian’s ultimate dream space. Judges loved it, with Shaynna Blaze describing the judges’ reaction to it as a “total hands-down love fest.”

“It was a lesson in texture, simplicity, and sophistication,” she says. “Even though it had their signature Japandi style, it was a place of complete relaxation and set a perfect emotional response when you walked into the room.”

Judge Marty Fox loved the space’s size and lofty ceiling heights and was won over by the lounge, fireplace, and high-quality cabinetry in the walk-in wardrobe.

While Steph and Gian’s use of colour, texture and restraint won them points with Blaze, their ability to design and fill a vast room also impressed her. “Too much space to fill can be just as challenging as working in too small a space,” she says.

“They created a focal point with the bed by using rich rust colours that keep the eye in one area rather than aimlessly wandering around the room.”

Kim and Chris (Port Melbourne, 2016)

Clinching victory with a sumptuous main bedroom with dimensions comparable to some whole apartments was “a real turning point,” recalls judge Darren Palmer.

“This was the first master bedroom suite I can recall on The Block, and it was so ample in scale and amenity it felt truly luxurious.”

Kim and Chris paid meticulous attention to detail, from the niches concealing the curtain tracks to the cosy fireplace in front of the bed. “Including full-height doorways and tall double doors made it feel like a luxury hotel in your own home,” Palmer recalls. “There were many lovely and simple details built into this space.”

A decade after the couple’s win, he says a few tweaks would be necessary to bring the space up to speed.  “The bedside pendant lights haven’t aged well, and I think we’ve become far more accustomed to custom and built-in joinery,” he says.

Will and Karlie (Port Melbourne, 2016)

“Woah,” was Palmer’s initial reaction on seeing the custom-made feature wall in Will and Karlie’s main bedroom, where every timber panel was individually crafted. The unique and attention-grabbing feature has endured the test of time, says Domain editor Alice Stolz. “Even eight years on, it remains elegant and interesting while being subtle and unobtrusive – not a small order in the fickle world of feature walls. The natural wood and the irregular pattern make it imperfectly perfect.”

The grand double doors painted black with brass details made a big statement, and, at the time, Shaynna agreed with the couple’s choice of a perfectly scaled leather chair for the room. “It’s the right leather for that wall,” she said. “It’s beautiful.”

The walk-in wardrobe with a beautiful reclaimed brick wall as its centrepiece, surrounded by ample space, was lauded for its modern, stylish design and practicality.

Ronnie and Georgia (Hampton, 2021)

Ronnie and Georgia’s spectacular main bedroom with soaring ceilings, ambient lighting and sage scalloped wall left the judges in awe. “This has honestly got to be one of the most beautiful master bedrooms I’ve seen on judging 11 years of The Block,” said former judge Neale Whitaker, at the time. “It would have been a sure-fire win if not for the beautifully styled yet tiny walk-in robe.”

VJ panelling, floor-to-ceiling curtains, and scalloped wall lining added warmth to the large space with its six-metre-high ceilings, creating a feeling of being embraced by the room rather than lost.

“These two are the king and queen of bedrooms – they have rarely delivered one that I haven’t wanted to stay put in,” Stolz says. “The scalloped wall behind the bedhead was ingenious, the soaring ceilings, soothing and cocooning colours and all that natural light. Bedroom perfection.”
