The Grossi family have delivered their fair share of tastiness to Melbourne diners since Pietro Grossi migrated here from Italy in 1960. Their latest effort to ensure we don’t go hungry is Pezzo, the Grossis’ version of a fast-food joint. It’s named after Guy Grossi’s invention, pezzo, little pita-like pockets of 48-hour fermented pizza dough, baked and then stuffed with a variety of different fillings such as polpette with provolone and tomato or eggplant parmigiana.
The Grossi family has teamed up with Pitzy Folk, the man behind Capi soft drinks. So the drinks list includes Capi’s ready-mixed range, like a gin and dry tonic made with Sydney-distilled Poor Toms Gin.

There’s wine too, presented in single-serve bottles bright with specially designed Pezzo labels. A refreshing lemony prosecco from the King Valley goes as well with the calamari and zucchini pezzo as it does with a housemade bomboloni.
The best and most fast-food-appropriate drinks at Pezzo are the milkshakes that can be turbo-charged with a shot of booze. The Gianduia is a Nutella-like combination of chocolate and hazelnut that’s more than fine on its own but moves up a level of fun with a slug of Frangelico.
The Crema is a vanilla custard milkshake with a shot of rum. For those who like to really push the boundaries, it teams perfectly with a chunk of the Grossis’ famed tiramisu. Pizza pockets and boozy milkshakes? Count me in.
