A modern three-bedroom urban oasis has been born out of a historic two-bedroom cottage in a classic case of what is old being made new again.

Thanks to a second level – added four years ago during extensive renovations by the current owners – the home at 41 Kent St, Newtown in NSW, is living up to its suburb’s name.

Built in the 1880s, the makeover retains its heritage character on the outside but focuses on contemporary and timeless features on the inside, such as a Moroccan Bejmat tile soaking tub, Bolivia quartzite kitchen with a breakfast island and integrated appliances.

The renovation included combining the kitchen with the dining-living area, where a spiral staircase leads to the main bedroom with an en suite above.

The staircase is not the only example of how space is maximised to fit everything in.

A desk is integrated into the wardrobes in the main bedroom, providing a work-from-home space, while the laundry is combined with the main bathroom.

The courtyard has also been redesigned to provide a second entertaining area or outdoor room at the 134-square-metre property.

Shaun Stoker, of Ray White Erskineville, Alexandria, Glebe, Surry Hills, says functionality was at the heart of the renovations, including taking advantage of natural light.

“I think it’s going to suit a young professional couple who are buying their first property or coming from a unit who are looking to buy their first house,” he says.

“The lifestyle of Newtown is we’re dealing with small spaces, but it’s functional and in a really good location.”

He says the home is on the doorstep of Sydney Park, Enmore Theatre, Marrickville Metro, and the vibrant restaurants and bars of King Street.

The property is being sold at auction at 2pm on Saturday, November 22, and has a price guide of $2.2 million.
