Classic, opulent and sumptuous, velvet was once a highly-priced material that often symbolised wealth, power and royalty. But the good news is, this once unattainable fabric is now available to us all. We reached out to the experts for some tips on how to introduce this elegant trend into your home.

1. Beautiful bedding

Hayley Pannekoecke, co-designer of Kip & Co, says she has been “crushing” on velvet for years. “The weightiness, the sheen and the warmth are what really attracts us,” she says. “Every colour looks a little richer in velvet and with our velvet being 100 per cent cotton it is certain to help with a sound night’s sleep. Velvet is easy to style into your home as a plain fabric that will add richness, texture and warmth.”

2. Heavenly headboard

With the cooler months on the horizon, feel-good textures can add cosy warmth to your sleep space. In addition to thicker bedding, consider a velvet headboard that will serve as a focal point to the bedroom.

3. Creative cushions

Sue Morris, head of design at Linen House, says velvet will never out of style. “There is something about the tactile feel and lush appearance of velvet that is always luxurious,” she explains. Jewel hues like emerald and ruby are in right now. “You can easily bring the velvet trend into your home with some effectively placed velvet scatter cushions, both in the lounge and the bedroom. Layering with other textural fabrics, like linen, can make velvet can look relaxed and contemporary, especially in these fresh new colour palettes,” Morris says.

4. Sweet sofa

Kirsty Withers, founder of Incy Interiors, gives her top styling tips to venture into velvet with a modern-day frame of mind. “Velvet offers a decadent and traditional Elizabethan opulence. Harness the power of this rich textile and select a statement piece that will hold your attention, without needing to go over the top. Select a shade of velvet that complements (and doesn’t compete with) the colour of your walls. This textile is rather heavy to the touch, so best accessorise with solid decor that will help balance and shape your space.”

5. Stylish stool

If you’re not ready to brave a large piece of velvet furniture, try something smaller, like a stool or ottoman. They can be used as a chair for a vanity table, as a handy footstool to rest on, and even as a side table styled with scattered books and magazines on top.
