Where to get your ice-cream (and gelato) fix

There’s nothing like having a gourmet ice-cream when it’s so hot outside the pavement is melting. And even though Melbourne can have four seasons in one day, there’s a rich and growing ice-cream and gelato scene across the suburbs.

We’ve searched high and low, tasted far and wide, to let let you know about five of our favourite ice-cream and gelato places in Melbourne that you can check out over the summer months.

Gelato Messina Fitzroy, Richmond & Windsor

With a team of ‘mad gelato professors’ using a bunch of natural, real (and delicious) ingredients, it’s no wonder Gelato Messina has become a local, national and international institution. With delicious flavours including classics apple pie and chocolate chip there’s something for every taste. There’s even classes to learn how to make the gelato for those who can’t resist the icy creamy treats.

TRUE ROMANCE – Peanut butter gelato smashed with caramel brownie, milk chocolate peanut fudge and candied peanuts. Don’t spend your friday night in a club looking for your one true love, it’s right here.

N2 Fitzroy

For those who love a science experiment in their ice-cream then N2’s liquid nitrogen, flash frozen gelato is truly something to behold. The concoction produces some spectacular results while the delicious gelato sundaes are being made. N2 doesn’t do healthy desserts so don’t expect any skinny or fat free offerings.

Will’s Batch Elsternwick, Bentleigh & Beaumaris

There’s nothing like the taste of delicious home-made, ice-cream – especially the kind that’s made in small batches at Will’s Batch. Offering over 50 flavours to creamy connoisseurs (as well as sundaes and shakes), Will’s Batch will spoil you for choice.

My Two Mums Melbourne & surrounds

It’s Australia’s first ice-cream sandwich truck and it offers a delicious array of flavours sandwiched between two tasty cookies. Truly, it’s a match made in heaven.

Sundae School Ice Creamery Caulfield North

This is the new kid on the block, promising to give you an “education in ice-cream”. From the team behind Tuck Shop Take Away (and a few doors down from it), the American-style parlour produces small-batch artisan ice-cream. On top of that, it serves up ice-cream sandwiches, thickshakes, spiders and picture-perfect sundaes.
