A new concept is taking shape on Northbourne Avenue that aims to encourage small businesses to take the big step into a shopfront premise.

The MidTown precinct, based around the Mantra hotel and Edgeworth apartment complex near the intersection of Northbourne and Macarthur Avenues, is set to offer young businesses term-free leases in a variety of spaces from $400 per week (plus GST).

MidTown curator, Elle Greet, says the flexible and affordable lease options are designed to encourage boutique businesses to present their products to a bigger audience.

“We’d like to encourage pop-up shops, artists, growers and makers, the kind of entrepreneurs who are ready to take the next step,” she says.

“This is achievable at MidTown through flexible leasing that removes a lot of the cost and terms of a traditional lease.”

Greet says another driver in the concept has been the desire to create a community touchpoint.

“I think MidTown will become a welcome addition to this part of the city and provide a destination location for not only the adjacent Turner community, but Canberra more generally,” she says.

There are up to six spaces available and these can be sub-divided into areas from 19 square metres. The largest space would be 42 square metres. MidTown will open its doors early in the second half of the year.
