A renovated two-bedroom home in Gowrie was the only Canberra property sold under the hammer on Saturday.

Close to 40 people gathered to watch the sole auction listing, 18 Wheatley Street, sell for $541,000.

The sale whittled down to some back and forth between two of the six registered bidders.

The two-bedroom, two-bathroom townhouse features a spacious, open-plan living and dining area complete with fresh paint and timber flooring.

A long island bench opens up the large kitchen, which has been fitted with new appliances.

Other features include a covered timber deck, low-maintenance yards and privacy from the street.

Luton Properties auctioneer Dan Cooper said the turn-out and successful sale of the home was a testament to good marketing and Canberra’s strengthening market.

“It shows the market is kicking off quite strongly off the back of a strong finish last year,” he said.

Mr Cooper said the owners of 18 Wheatley Street had renovated the house over the last three years.

The location of the home close to the Gowrie shops, schools and Erindale shopping centre also attracted potential buyers.

It’s the third house Luton Properties Tuggeranong has sold since auctions began one week ago.

The agency auctioned off two houses in Bonython on January 16.

A fourth One Agency property in Hawker was originally listed for auction the same day but was sold a day earlier.

Mr Cooper said January auctions were gradually becoming more popular.

“Our office always starts the year fairly early with our auctions,” he said.

“There are fewer auctions in January but we’re starting to see that change a bit.”
