Years of family holiday rentals in Merimbula finally led the Layton family to buying their own piece of coastal paradise in the popular Long Point area.
Campbell couple Peter and Teresa Layton have owned their three-bedroom, 1960s home since 2005 and continue to enjoy the tranquillity and change of pace that the NSW South Coast offers.
“It’s a great, elevated location with views through the trees and we’re close to Short Point and Bar Beaches – one’s great for surfing and the other for relaxing,” Peter says.
“We try to get down there several times a year.”
At other times, the home is available for short-term rent and bookings quickly fill up around school holidays and Christmas.
“There are peaks, but the bookings are pretty steady, less so in the winter – which is a pity because it’s just as nice – there’s always something to see,” Peter says.
While the rent helps with some of the costs, the Laytons make sure the beach house isn’t all business.
“We block out time for ourselves, particularly around New Year’s Eve when we can get the family together,” Peter says.
“We just love the place – the beaches, fishing, popping out for a coffee. It’s a different mindset.”
