Originally home to the local police sergeant in 1884, the historical and charming 48 Dry Street, Boorowa, is now up for sale.
Thought to have been constructed in 1880, the one-bedroom cottage sits on a 1346-square-metre block with quirky cottage-style gardens and two storage sheds/workshops.
Most recently, the one-bedroom home was owned by Brian Coates, a former architectural draftsman who moved from Canberra to the Boorowa region in 2005.
Brian’s son, Andrew, says his father had great respect for the history of architecture and had quickly decided the home would be his retirement project.
“Dad bought it a while back,” he says. “It was a fibre-clad place which he liked but didn’t know a lot about.
“As soon as he started to pull the cladding back [and found] the wooden sleepers underneath, my dad was just delighted.”
That’s when Brian decided to restore the home while being faithful to its history and bringing in modern living conveniences.
This included exposing the wooden roof beams, pulling back the sheets covering the wall to expose newspaper clippings, and connecting a hot water system.
With a split-system reverse-cycle air-conditioner, and a mixture of exposed brick, wood and concrete walls, the home really is the best of both worlds.
Andrew says he and his family hope to see the home go to somebody who will cherish it as Brian has.
“Dad would love it if somebody kept the place at the front and enjoyed the history of it,” he says.
“Ideally, we would like someone who wants to build a place out the back and use the place at the front as an Airbnb or a guest house.”
Selling agent Amanda Serafin of Flemings Property Services agrees that the home could be used as a short-term accommodation investment and says the home has already had an overwhelming amount of interest.
“We have had 54 perspective interests in the last four days, and I think it’s because the home is quite quirky and a bit different,” she says.
“It’s a real mixture of people of all ages and maybe a few sicky-beakers but the home is just so interesting.”
The home is 250 metres from the local hospital and under 500 metres from the local public school, so with its mix of antique charm and convenience, it’s not one to miss.
