Introducing quilted bedding and chunky throw blankets to your living space could help when the temperature drops.

When the mercury drops, nothing quite strikes the fashion balance of keeping you stylish yet warm like layering. And the same can be said about the home.

Just as the floaty dresses and sandals make way for coats and boots, when the cooler months arrive, switching your interior textiles from lightweight pieces of cotton to richer fabrics can instantly bring warmth to a space.

Designer and founder of the Style Curator, Canberra’s own Gina Ciancio, suggests introducing quilted bedding and chunky throw blankets when the temperature drops.

“It will all add a lot more warmth, but also create the impact of visual warmth because you’re looking at these heavier materials, and it makes the space look cosy as well,” she says.

“Embrace more natural materials, especially ones that are quite tactile, so wood and jute. That can really create that connection to nature, which can feel a little bit luxe in winter when you’re hibernating inside.”

For Ciancio, winter always means bringing out a pure wool chunky throw she splurged on a few years ago.

“It’s just so cosy and lovely and warm,” she says. “As soon as you bring that out, it feels like winter. You drape it over the sofa and you want to curl up there in the evening and just enjoy a nice cosy night in.”

Colour can also have a big impact on the mood of a space. In winter, opt for richer, earthier, deeper colours to make the right impact.

Wall art is another way to easily change the feel of your space to suit the season, without breaking the bank.

“Lighting is another one that is so often overlooked in styling,” Ciancio says. “In winter, I like to rely less on overhead ceiling lights and a lot more on floor lamps and table lamps. That’s just going to really set a cosier feel in your home.”

To strike the perfect wintery interiors balance, it’s not just about what you can see and touch.

“Our sense of smell plays a big impact on how we experience a space,” Ciancio says.

She suggests swapping summery scents like lime and jasmine for something a bit earthier.

“Scents like eucalyptus or myrtle are going to make your space feel a lot richer. If you’re not a candle person, you might want to embrace an oil diffuser, which is a really nice way of dispersing fragrance in a room.”
