Some of us may have fantasised about owning a pub. Perhaps it’s the thought of becoming the publican and much-loved pillar of the local community; or that warm feeling in gifting the occasional pint to a favoured local.
Whatever the fantasy, the reality could be as close as Majors Creek, near Braidwood and around 90 minutes from Canberra.
The Majors Creek pub, also known as Elrington Hotel, is chock-a-block with olde-world charm and is a favourite watering hole with locals and tourists.
It was built in 1913 when the region was gradually winding down from its heyday as a gold miner. Ironically, that industry’s demise has been reversed recently with the nearby Dargues Reef Gold Mine going into production.
Kelly Allen of Luton Properties Braidwood said the pub opportunity would suit a range of buyers.
“Certainly, anyone in the hospitality industry would be able to bring valuable experience to an option like this,” she says.
“But, equally, it could be someone looking for a tree change who simply brings bundles of enthusiasm and some business know-how.”
The pub offers four income streams: on-site accommodation, a post office service, pub meals and bar sales.
Accommodation includes backpacker options, powered sites, pub rooms and an owner’s residence. There’s also an outdoor stage area for live events including an annual music festival that draws a crowd of around 2000.
