Nothing beats sipping wine while overlooking gentle hills covered in vineyards. Even better if the wine label has your name on it.
Would-be vintners can live the dream of owning a vineyard in the sought-after Murrumbateman winemaking district, with the award-winning Tallagandra Hill Winery at Gundaroo on the market.
Selling agent Ben Faulks, of Ray White Belconnen, says the winery was established in 1997 by a closet farmer who moved from Sydney to try his hand at viticulture and established a cellar door that is now regarded as one of the best in the Canberra region.
“The winery’s turnover has grown by 24 per cent year on year since inception, and the owner is constantly having to revise projections and plans due to growing demand,” Faulks says.
“The real opportunity for a new owner is that sales that have reached these heights have only been made via the cellar door. Adding a wholesale operation could maximise the potential of existing infrastructure and boost turnover even further, Faulks says.
The property has a four-bedroom architecturally designed home, and interest in the estate has come from lifestyle buyers in the local area and surrounding property owners attracted to the winery’s infrastructure, Faulks says.
The 15.5-hectare estate has 12,000 vines and produces varietals including shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, tempranillo, riesling, viognier, pinot gris and chardonnay.
A large wine storage facility is a recent addition to the estate.
“The property would suit someone keen to own a successful wine business without the need to spend years becoming established, or a national wine producer looking to add a Canberra footprint to their portfolio,” Faulks says.
The property is being sold as a going concern and the sale includes the house, land, and winery plant, equipment and stock.
The purchase also includes business trademarks, the website, cellar club and membership of all surrounding wine associations.
“The current owner has also offered to stay on in a consultancy capacity to help smooth the transition if the eventual purchaser doesn’t have the requisite background,” Faulks says.
Tallagandra Hills Winery at 1692 Murrumbateman Road, Gundaroo is being auctioned on May 13 (10.30am) at Ray White Sydney, level 17, 135 King St, Sydney.
