A private island is for sale in the Northern Territory – and it comes with some unique neighbours.
Goat Island is a 25-acre swathe of trees and mangroves on the Adelaide River.
For twenty years, it has been the home of legendary publican and croc wrangler ‘King’ Kai Hansen.
King Kai does it all: he pours beers, cooks burgers, and runs wildlife tours of his island.
A newspaper clipping pasted to the wall of his pub hints at his past exploits: “Man whacks croc with frying pan”.
For decades, visitors have been flocking to his one-of-a-kind tourism venture.
Getting there is part of the adventure – the only way you can reach Goat Island is by boat or helicopter.
Day-trippers can drink at the pub or venture down to the croc-spotting deck.
Visitors can also sleep overnight at the handbuilt wilderness lodge for a back-to-nature experience.
After many years running the business solo, King Kai is ready to pass Goat Island to a new owner.
“He’s doing it all by himself, and it’s a lot of work,” Adam Hayes from Call2View Realty told Domain.
Hayes said the publican wants to move back to the city and “live by the golf course”.
So far, there has been some interest from people looking to continue a tourism venture on Goat Island.
But private buyers are also eyeing up the property.
“There’s nothing to say you can’t just live on the island and use it as a fishing base or something like that,” Hayes said.
“It’s pretty unique to own an island in the Territory.”
Goat Island is on the market for $1.5 million.
