‘Don’t say a grave’: Owner queries unique brickwork found in old home

It’s not unusual for old houses to retain original characteristics.

It could be something as simple as a door handle, or ornate pressed tin ceilings or centuries old floorboards.

Most of the time these features add to the home and are kept or lovingly restored.

Yet, as many homeowners can attest, there are remnants of a home that raise questions.

One homeowner, who lives outside of Australia, recently took to Facebook to query something they found in their garage.

“A section of my garage floor in my house that was built in 1888,” they captioned a photo in the Old House Explorer group.

The image shows a concreted area with tyre marks as well as a patchwork of bricks appearing to fill something.

“The rest of the floor’s cement. Anybody have any idea why it’s like this and please don’t say it’s a grave,” the owner said.

An old pit or a grave? The section of bricks the homeowner is questioning.

Curious social media users soon shared their thoughts on the unique brick mosaic, with only one jokingly agreeing it was indeed a grave.

Others suggested, given the location, the bricks were filling a previous garage pit.

“Probably originally a pit for undercar work,” one person suggested.

“Garage. Built later it’s a service pit covered in. Drive over to change oil and other repairs,” a second person wrote.

My aunt had a pit like this in her garage. It was for root vegetable storage. It wasn’t real deep, and they kept it covered with burlap,” a third person shared.

Some people wondered whether the brickwork was deliberately left.

“Depending on when the rest was built it could’ve been a permit work around,” one person wrote.

“In some places you don’t need a permit to build as long as you have some of the original structure. That spot in the floor could be the original structure.”

“Someone saved a bit of history,” another person wrote.

“It might be just someone keeping a small section to show what use to be there. Like keeping a strip of wallpaper and framing it to hang back in that room,” yet another said.
