A quest to build a home that delivers low operating costs and requires minimal maintenance is behind the design of this contemporary Dunlop home.
Homeowner Nigel Wines says he had been prepared to invest in great design and quality construction to achieve his aim.
The two-year-old home was designed by award-winning architect Andy Verri and built by Jigsaw Housing.
“A lot of emphasis went into the design, the materials that were used and the energy-saving technologies that could be incorporated,” he says.
“The house temperature never drops beneath 16C – even in winter – and we’ve not had a power bill since we’ve been here.”
And energy credits now total about $1800 per annum.
Wines says insulation within the slab, solar electric hot water, double glazing throughout and a 5000-litre rainwater tank were cornerstones in his drive towards energy efficiency and low maintenance.
The four-bedroom open plan living home features burnished concrete floors in its living areas and corn syrup husk carpets to the bedrooms and other zones.
“The carpets don’t track dirt as much and are really easy to vacuum,” Wines says.
“Reducing cleaning time was also a goal of the design.”
The kitchen features Smeg appliances, an induction cook top and Caesarstone island bench plus a walk-in pantry. The spacious dining and living areas are adjoined by a family room with built-in toy storage lockers. There’s also a study.
The four bedrooms include a master with en suite and a spectacular main bathroom – both with under-tile heating.
Outside, there is a covered entertainment area and landscaped lawn areas that are watered free by that big rainwater tank. There’s a 54-square-metre carport and space for a trailer.
