Marketed last month for $3.5 million, The Keep in Tassie's north-east reaches is one of the world's unique properties.

A medieval Tasmanian house that seems to teeter on the edge of the world has a new owner, who must appreciate solitude.

Marketed last month for $3.5 million, according to Domain, The Keep in Tassie’s north-east reaches is one of the world’s unique properties.

Now under the offer, 535 New England Road in Goulds Country was constructed in the image of a Scottish fortified tower, and its lonesome presence on a 650-metre pinnacle has made it a favourite of tourists and travel photographers.

From an incredible vantage point, the property takes in 360 degree Bass Strait, forest and valley views, on the lip of Tasmania’s wild coastline.

The only neighbours are the the lights of the Eddystone Lighthouse at night, and myrtle, sassafras and tree ferns in the surrounding Blue Tier Forest Reserve.

The Keep, built in 2009, has welcomed tourists for two years and since opening, has been at 90 per cent occupancy, according to the listing.

Pricefinder records show it was last traded in 2019 for $820,000, and seven years before that, it carried a $100,000 asking price.

The owners who bought the house in 2019 transformed it from a private residence to guest accommodation, and added one of the great attractions – a granite outdoor bath.

Agents from Knight Frank’s Launceston office did the deal.
