A house hunter in the US has recalled their unease at discovering a hidden extra room during home opening.

It was last weekend when the prospective buyer, who didn’t identify themselves, ventured to an old cabin in the mountains in North County, San Diego, for a showing.

“The place was built in the 1920s, nothing too wild at first, just an old worn-out mountain cabin,” the individual wrote in a post to Reddit.

The narrow doorway in the cabin.

Not long after walking into the property, the mood changed.

“In the middle of the living room floor there was this trapdoor,” they wrote.

“We opened it and found a narrow concrete staircase going down into a hidden basement.”

Inside the basement, two of the walls were covered in mirrors.

“One wall had a built-in wall fan, an electrical panel and a heavy metal door,” they wrote.

“That door led into a small closet and in the bottom corner of that closet there was a tiny tunnel made of concrete blocks.”

The hidden tunnel.

The house hunter said to access the tunnel “you’d have to crawl through it”. They did not.

“The air down there was damp and heavy and the whole space had this weird vibe, like it hadn’t been opened in decades,” they wrote.

Even more peculiar, on paper, the room doesn’t seem to exist.

“It doesn’t show up on any property info or blueprints and even the realtor had no clue what it was,” they wrote.

The house hunter posted their experience online to gauge any shared experiences.

“Has anyone ever heard of something like this? What do you think it could have been?” they asked.

The basement area with the fan.

“Not sharing the address or outside photos for privacy and safety reasons. We didn’t mess with anything or go past what was already open, just wanted to share because it was one of the weirdest things I’ve come across.”

The post was soon flooded with scores of comments.

“My grandpa built a house in the 1920s and he built his basement to be a bar during the prohibition era. Maybe?” one person wrote.

“This is my first thought. bootlegger tunnel and a speakeasy,” a second person wrote.

“Gotta measure the dungeon for the full square footage to capture maximum value,” joked other person.

The mirrors in the basement.

Others referencing the 2022 horror film Barbarian which centres on a house, a hidden room and a basement.

“Yeah, I’ve seen Barbarian before, and it definitely came to mind when I was down there,” the house hunter shared.

“You’ve seen the movie and still went down there?!” one person replied.

The house hunter added that they didn’t plan to buy the home.
