How a naked guy led to the development of a stunning waterfront home

Brad and Shona Tuckman asked their architect to inspect the new site for their dream property but a shock discovery forced a drastic chance.

This story starts with a nightmare – a naked neighbour – and ends with a dream home.

American couple Brad and Shona Tuckman engaged a leading Miami-based architect to check out the canal-front Florida site of their new property.

And it was during this reconnaissance that their renowned architect Max Strang, Mr Tuckerman told luxury property site Mansion Global, noticed an exhibitionist neighbour on the opposite side of the canal, in a full state of nature.

Because the couple had bought a block of land opposite a nudist, Mr Strang instead designed a house without as many canal-facing windows, “because he didn’t want to see the naked guy”, Mr Tuckerman explained.

At first the Tuckman family were happy to live in the privacy-protecting, modified design, in Fort Lauderdale.

However, when a better location cropped up, on the tip of the peninsula, and no neighbour flaunting what Mother Nature gave them, the Tuckerman clan purchased the alternative block and made a move.

The new waterfront parcel of land would allow for a “cooler house”, Mr Tuckerman told his architect, the Mansion Global feature reported.

The result is a six-bedroom, cantilevered design, with colossal outdoor space, taking four years to meticulously construct.

Known as the River’s Reach Residence on Strang’s studio website, the project brief details how “vertical fins” providing shading, with dining areas positioned strategically to capture the breeze from the canal and a 1950s vibe in the crisp, minimalist finishes.
