A house right below the Hollywood sign has hit the market for the first time in nearly 40 years.
The quirky 1960s chalet is the closest house to the famous sign in the entire city of Los Angeles.
Owners Jeffrey Kleiser and Diana Walczak – a digital effects artist and a sculptor – have listed the house with a price guide of $US2.25 million ($3.46 million).
For that sum, you get a three-bedroom, four-bathroom family home with a rich artistic legacy.
Musicians, artists and digital pioneers have all called the property home over the years.
Members of the 1960s band The Association lived here in their heyday and Linda McCartney also paid a visit.
Despite being within striking distance of downtown Hollywood, the home feels a world away from the chaos.
“It’s perched up in the trees, almost like a treehouse,” agent Christopher Soffer told the New York Post.
“You have this sense when you’re there that you really feel like you’re entrenched in this lifestyle and this period of time that seems to have faded away with the modern age.
“You kind of also feel like you’re in a cabin in the woods, which is beautiful because the entire A-frame is essentially made out of wood.”
The house was first built in 1963 and is a classic of mid-century modernism.
Inside, the home’s anchoring point is a vast double-height window with views over the city to the Pacific Ocean.
Earth-coloured plaster, russet tiles, natural timber and a handbuilt stone fireplace root the building in the landscape.
One of the quirkiest rooms is a bright red kitchen with swirling blue countertops and a matching dining booth.
The owners have added a wealth of personal touches over the decades, from a backyard jacuzzi to a recording studio.
Their custodianship can also be felt in subtler ways: a magpie collection of knick-knacks, vintage furniture, full bookshelves and a well-used typewriter.
“Anchored at the end of a private road, this rare A-frame chalet offers one of the most iconic vantage points in Los Angeles,” the listing reads.
“6105 Mulholland Highway is not simply a home, it’s a living, breathing work of art.”
The listing is held by Soffer and Trenton Armitage from The Beverly Hills Estates.
