If there’s one place in the family home where parents are entitled to pamper themselves a little, it’s the main-bedroom suite.

After all, it’s their names going on the mortgage – if that doesn’t earn them a little luxury, what does?

Tyran Murphy of Hayman Partners, who lists this week’s Kambah feature property, says the Malcolm Place house, built in 2020, has a main suite that is more than just an exclusive space for adults – it provides a whole new lifestyle.

“The suite is cleverly secluded from the minor bedrooms and noisier parts of the home,” he says. “It’s delivered a real sanctuary with plenty of room, packed with bespoke luxury features that lift it into another league.”

Murphy says it’s clear the design has been carefully thought through.

“There’s a private outdoor space,” he says. “Inside there’s a warming winter fire. You could watch TV in bed, or revel in a bespoke dressing room that’s even got a chandelier.

“The whole package delivers a purpose-built retreat.”

Jo Tuck-Lee of Marble & Muse Interiors says main-bedroom suites have evolved in recent years, with many key ideas influencing their design.

“Large dressing rooms that organise everything from clothing to bedroom linen have become increasingly popular,” she says. “Lighting is also crucial for both functionality and in promoting a sense of luxury.

“Sensor-activated strip lighting provides subtle night-time illumination, while hidden mood lights offer ambience.”

Tuck-Lee says mixed metals and natural stone and sustainably sourced timber are trending as popular material selections in these spaces.

Parent trap

Sanctuary
The main-bedroom suite is increasingly being placed in a separate location away from other bedrooms. This offers parents a refuge away from the general noise and activity of the household.

Size matters
Spaces are getting bigger, beyond the original intent to provide just enough room for a bed. Main suites may now include space for seating, perhaps a spot for a quiet read.

Bling
A fireplace or a private courtyard? A free-standing bath for the en suite? A walk-in wardrobe that is more a dressing room with the woody ambience of a private club? All of these and more are making their way into main-bedroom suites.

Feature property

Those who haven’t been to Kambah in a while may get a bit giddy when they clock this knockout at the base of Mount Taylor.

The contemporary family residence, sitting on a few barrowloads short of 2000 square metres, certainly puts fresh meaning into the phrase “no expense spared”.

And that has paid off big time, with nearly 400 square metres under roof.

This double-storey home makes a bold welcoming statement with a towering, stone-clad, porte cochere that soars.

Inside, where to start?

Try this: five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a butler’s pantry, two living areas, a theatre room, two balconies, outdoor kitchen, multiple al fresco options, a pool and a three-car garage.

Interior highlights include a soaring entry void, bespoke timber features, herringbone tiles, an electric fireplace and a custom bar.

Kitchens so often grab headlines, but, for once, let’s skip to the undoubted showpiece: the parents’ suite.

It’s tucked away – if “tucked” means big enough to throw a party – enhanced by three-metre ceilings and windows that draw in sweeping views.

Then there’s a fireplace and wall-mounted TV.

And those parental indulgences are just getting started. The bespoke dressing room could fit out a fashion parade while the en suite could grace a six-star hotel with its floor-to-ceiling tiles, free-standing stone bath and double vanity.

The cherry on top is a spacious private balcony.
