A Louis XIII chateau in the heart of France’s famous Burgundy region that has been passed down from generation to generation for 700 years is up for sale for the first time for a little over $5 million.

The 60-hectare property has been held by one family and treated like a family heirloom since the 14th century. The chateau itself was built in the 17th century, well before Marie Antoinette and Napoleon Bonaparte came on the scene.

It overlooks the remnants of its medieval moat, has 14 bedrooms to accommodate large families or guests, and features a coat of arms built into the facade.

The property is listed with Denniel Immobilier – Antiquaires en Immeubles for €3.216 million.

The commute for most Australians, however, may be a little far, so for the asking price of €3.2 million, or about $5.7 million, one of these four local properties may appeal instead.

For $5.2 million – roughly the same price as the chateau – this grand tri-level terrace home in Redfern, Sydney, could be yours.

Combining contemporary interior design with the traditional elegance of its facade, it offers the best of both the historic and modern worlds.

Its five bedrooms may not be as many as the chateau’s 14, but four of them come with an en suite, while the fifth bedroom has a fifth bathroom next to it.

The single-car garage also has direct interior access via the laundry, and the home features a Tasmanian oak gas kitchen, gas fireplaces, and ducted zoned air-conditioning.

The 164-square-metre property is just 2.6 kilometres from the centre of the CBD.

It may not have the remnants of a moat, but if you would like unwanted guests to hit the water, this hilltop house does have its own pool.

With a price guide of between $5.9 million and $6.49 million, you’ll need a little more money up your sleeve than you would for the chateau, but it probably will not require as much upkeep, as it’s less than two years old.

Located in the Carrington Estate, it offers exclusivity and opulence, thanks to imported European finishes and a Lucretia crystal chandelier suspended high above the entrance hall.

Each of the five bedrooms has an en suite, while the property also features a study, an al fresco area and a theatre room – the latter only used if you can turn yourself away from looking at the panoramic views across Melbourne.

If you crave an Aussie chateau of your own, look no further than Barossa Chateau in Lyndoch, South Australia. Although not currently listed with a price guide, it last sold for $2.3 million in 2016.

The French-inspired architecture is complemented by its 3.64-hectare grounds, which include endless vineyard vistas. The property sits in the Barossa Valley, a world-famous wine region known for its shiraz and cabernet sauvignon wines, compared to Burgundy’s pinot noir and chardonnay.

The building has a grand ballroom and art gallery on the ground floor, as well as three bedrooms, a study, plus formal dining and family areas upstairs.

It has been visited by royalty, with Queen Elizabeth II opening the stunning rose garden in 2002.

For the same price as the French chateau, you could be living the quintessential Queensland lifestyle by the beach, on a much more manageable 997-square-metre block in a brand new, architect-designed home.

With four or five spacious bedrooms and a parents’ retreat with a spa, it provides all the space a family really needs.

Buy a bottle of Aussie wine at the local bottle-o and savour it while soaking in the saltwater pool with built-in seating, or enjoying the panoramic ocean views that stretch to Moreton Island from the main living area.

Ironbark decks and spotted gum floors and ceiling beams add an Australian touch, and the expansive yard is touted as perfect for kids to play football and cricket.

The vendor will consider offers over $5.6 million.
