Choosing a suburb to buy a home in hinges on several boring but important factors, including proximity to work and public transport.

But what about love? Where do you buy if you are wanting to accumulate some dates or put/get a ring on it?

Demographer Bernard Salt, from KPMG, has identified Melbourne’s bachelor and bachelorette hotspots, based on a ratio of men to women aged 25 to 35, which he says is about five years either side of the prime marrying age for the average Australian.

Sharing his social insights with the Australian Property Institute conference last week, Salt revealed that if a Melburnian fancies finding a paramour, they are best to go west.

Flemington is the bachelorette hotspot, with 1.4 women to every one man.

And West Footscray is the bachelor hotspot, with 2.08 men to every one woman.

Salt pointed out that plonked between the two postcodes is Flemington racecourse. Anyone who has attended Oaks Day at the Spring Racing Carnival knows he’s onto a good thing.

So, Domain has found the best bachelor and bachelorette pads for sale in Salt’s hit zones.

Thank us later.
