Mysterious lamplit tunnel is hiding beneath somebody’s house
Secret tunnels are usually confined to mystery novels, but one US house shows that truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.
A dim, lamplit passageway runs through the hillside beneath this handbuilt stone house in rural Virginia.
The tunnel is long and narrow with thick concrete walls.
At one end of the corridor is a blank wall, at the other is a set of cast concrete steps with copper pipes for handrails.
According to floorplans posted online, the subterranean tunnel links the home’s basement to a nearby garage.
However, there is no explanation of why the secret tunnel to the garage was built in the first place.
It’s one of many question marks hanging over the property.
The three-bedroom house sits alone on a wild hilltop near the small Appalachian town of Floyd.
For miles around, there is nothing to see but the dense forests of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The castle-inspired house was first built in 1991, according to the listing.
As you walk up to the front door, the path is guarded by a huddle of stone angel statues.
The gothic atmosphere continues inside, where the dark timber furniture and iron chandeliers look like they were borrowed from a movie set.
Coloured light spills in from stained glass windows, casting a glow over the exposed stone fireplace.
A network of staircases lead up through the home’s floor floors to an eggplant-purple attic where a lone American flag stands in one corner of the room.
At the very top of the house is an open-air observation deck with views over nearly 35 acres of grounds.
The property is on the market for $US325,000 ($499,000). It is scheduled to go to auction on 13 November.
