It is not often you come across the combination of new home and heritage suburb where the old and new are designed for seamless interaction. The Bradfield in Downer, seeks to be that exception.

A development offering townhouses of two or three bedrooms, The Bradfield is situated among the wide, tree-lined streets of Downer – an inner-city suburb of Canberra steeped in heritage.

Keenan Veraar, of LJ Hooker, heralds the importance of community that makes this development unique.

“This project truly celebrates community, with the current residents of Downer being closely involved throughout the process,” he says.

“This new community at Downer will take pride of place on the former Downer school site.

“In its glory days, the school was an integral part of the local community. This landmark location will embark on a journey to rediscover what once made this address so celebrated.”

The recent revitalisation of the Downer shops has seen the likes of a trendy and bustling cafe, yoga studio and veterinary clinic to the suburb, creating a vibrant hub and engaging lifestyle.

“No other development offers village-life ambience right at its doorstep,” Varaar says.

The Bradfield is deliberate in its design of development that integrates itself within the community.

“It will deliver a free-flowing aspect, with walkways and thoroughfares seamlessly intersecting existing streetscapes.”

“The design honours the established and praised characteristics, such as open spaces and heritage-listed trees, that punctuate the site and encourages people to connect and enjoy the beautiful surrounds.”

The retention of the “Old School Courtyard” serves to embrace communal areas with a heritage flair.

Situated only a couple of minutes away from the larger shopping district of Dickson, The Bradfield has all the conveniences of inner-city living while retaining the highlights of suburban living, including nearby nature reserves, bicycle paths and playing fields.

“The Bradfield sits on an axis of diverse leisure and active experiences,” Veraar says.

Careful deliberation has been put into the aesthetic of the development. It includes “a materials palette that reiterates that of original Downer dwelling typologies.

“Red brickwork and dark roof combined with more contemporary materials that harmonise yet add visual interest,” he says.

There are also plans to replant the heritage trees on the Melba, Bradfield and Frencham Street frontages.
