The iconic New York City brownstone from Breakfast at Tiffany’s has hit the market for the first time in a decade.

It was here that Audrey Hepburn’s character Holly Golightly hosted parties and clambered out of fire escapes in her iconic black dress and chignon.

Exterior scenes for the 1961 film were shot outside the classic Gilded Age brownstone in Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

The interior scenes, however, were filmed on studio sets in Hollywood.

Now the townhouse is on the market for $US15 million ($23.3 million).

The home has been meticulously renovated by the current owner, who transformed it into an opulent family home with marble bathrooms, an elevator and a Tiffany Blue front door.

It’s a far cry from the Bohemian pad that featured in the film, with its tiny fire escape and exploding stove.

The owner, beverage executive Joseph Harkins, bought the house in 2015 for $US7.4 million ($11.5 million), according to the New York Post.

Harkins personally oversaw the renovation.

“Gracing a picture-perfect, tree-lined street between Lexington and Third Avenues, this five-storey townhouse […] has been transformed through a three-year, no-expense-spared renovation and restoration,” the listing reads.

“This legendary residence offers more than cinematic history – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a reimagined piece of New York.”

In total, there are four bedrooms and seven bathrooms spread across the house at 169 East 71st Street.

At the centre of the home is a formal parlour with a marble fireplace, two antique chandeliers and an oak-and-ebony herringbone floor.

Upstairs, the bedrooms each enjoy their own spa-style ensuite with Italian marble vanities.

A separate unit is located beneath the main house on the street level.

This one-bedroom flat has its own entrance and kitchen – perfect for renting out or hosting visiting family.
