An abandoned mental asylum, known as one of the most haunted sites in America, is looking for a buyer.

Named Eloise, the property in Michigan is part of a 50-acre complex that’s been on the market since last year, asking just $US1.5 million ($1.97 million).

An unreleased horror movie was shot in 2014 at the site, based on the spooky folklore surrounding it.

“Some have reported hearing strange moans, screams, and roars on the old grounds”, according to the website Haunted USA

Explorers have started rumours about jars of human body parts and creepy snapshots of patients in the abandoned buildings that were torn down in the 1980s.

There are several YouTube clips of thrill seekers on the property and reports of a “white spectral woman” wandering the grounds.

The stretch of land was once so big it had its own postcode and was home to a population of thousands.

Much of the complex has been burnt down and the last patients left the mental hospital in 1984.

The site still includes an old fire station from the 1800s, a decommissioned power plant and two maintenance buildings – home to a local government office.

An elaborate series of underground tunnels were used by the hospital to transport patients, but the entrances have been shut off.

The new owners of Eloise could take inspiration from other commercial developments that have been converted into residential buildings.

Melbourne’s Pentridge Prison, once a home to violent criminals, has recently reopened as a luxury hotel.

The renovation is going to be a mixed use site with nine floors of hotel rooms, as well as six levels of residential apartments.

The complex will also have a restaurant, day spa, conference facilities, a gym, indoor pool and parking, while the chapel is being converted into a functions area.

Ads for the site are being run with the ironic tag line Escape to Pentridge.
