Naturally, the definition of what makes a house “cool” will differ from one person to another. To you, a cool home might be a slick warehouse conversion, while to someone else, it may be an off-grid treehouse. To celebrate the need for variety, here’s our pick of some of the coolest houses around the world, in all their mix-matched glory.

1. The coolest treehouse: Washington, United States

We’ve seen our fair share of treehouses in this job, but The Cinder Cone really takes it to another level. Built by a small group of close friends, the structure consists of two separate houses, linked together by a bridge… there’s even a skate bowl and a wood-fired hot tub.

2. The coolest warehouse conversion: Melbourne, Australia

The Loft is about as cool as a warehouse conversion can get. This project transformed a 125-year-old factory building into an award-winning modern home, featuring a mixture of intimately scaled family spaces and vast entertaining zones. Key highlights include the indoor steel bridge and the outdoor full height courtyards.

3. The coolest tiny home: Sandefjord, Norway

If you’re going to jump on the tiny house movement, one can only hope it’s for a place as cool as this rocky retreat. This 30-square metre home is tucked against a cliff and features a stepped concrete roof that doubles as a viewing platform. The surrounding beaten boulders also protect the home from extreme weather.

4. The coolest dome home: New Paltz, New York

Dome homes are a peculiar trend, however, when done right, the result is grand. Take this home located in the middle of a forest for example, it spins a full 360 degrees to offer gorgeous bush views at every possible angle. Fancy a change of scenery? Just push a button on the remote.

5. The coolest holiday house: Koromačno, Croatia

Start packing your bags, because you’re going to want to take a holiday once you lay eyes on this home. This breathtaking beach house sits just 10 meters from the sea, with a huge outdoor terrace overlooking the ocean, plus its very own private beach (we’re not making this stuff up!).

6. The coolest city penthouse: New York, USA

If a lavish penthouse in the city is your idea of a cool home, then look no further. This six-storey New York penthouse features a contemporary architectural design with windows galore overlooking Manhattan. Oh, and did we mention, there’s also a stainless steel slide that lets its young-at-heart owners twist and turn their way downstairs.
