Over the coming weeks I will be doing something I love to do with some of Adelaide’s favourite celebrities – having a look inside their homes!
I love seeing how people live, how they’ve decorated and what inspires them, which is why I adore an open inspection. So I’m looking forward to bringing you some insider pictures of the homes of these familiar faces.
First up is well-known radio announcer and Adelaide personality, Jason “Snowy” Carter. Snowy has been a regular on the Adelaide airwaves for many years, but recently decided to peruse his other passion by getting his real estate licence.
I know Snowy also shares my love for home design and he was happy to show off his newly renovated Hills home. And it’s not hard to see why he’s so proud of it.
Thanks for chatting with me, Snowy. Tell me how long you’ve lived in this house and what you love about it?
We’ve been here for 14 months. At first we loved it because it was on two titles, giving us a potential development opportunity. But when we walked around the home and noticed that people from the 1890s and early 1900s had inscribed their names into the front stone wall, in the most amazing handwriting, we really fell in love with the home. It gave it a life. Since then we have added a bedroom, renovated the bathrooms and put in a new Shaker-style kitchen. It really feels like a home now, more than any other we’ve owned. The other thing I love is the view from our bedroom, which over looks the Oakbank racecourse and vines.
What’s your favourite thing about the area you live in?
For me it’s the Oakbank pub. It’s a great pub, owned by two brothers who love the community and many of us locals head there for pizza on a Friday night.
I also love the quietness of Oakbank but that it’s only 25 minutes from the city. It is country living, but so close to many of the things we all need.
I love the modern country styling of the home and especially the stunning sandstone wall in the kitchen. How would you describe your decorating style?
Kate my wife is the decorator and she has a real eye for it. Kate tried to work with the 1895 cottage exterior walls, which are now the interior walls.
I’d say it’s a mix of modern country with a Hamptons-style influence, that includes the Plantation shutters, Shaker kitchen, marble benchtops and subway tiles.
Where do you get your design ideas and inspiration from?
Foxtel, The Block, Pinterest, Grand Design magazine, Australian House and Garden, Country Living and Vogue Living. Also what we see on real estate websites.
You’ve recently made a career change and got into real estate. What inspired this move?
I’ve always loved real estate. Kate and I have renovated many homes over the last 12 years, from art deco and Federation-style homes to two townhouses we bought at lock-up at a mortgagee sale. We even bought a farm and flipped that! My two passions are helping people and real estate, so I thought “follow your dreams and get into the industry”. I wish now I had have done it five years ago! My focus is on the Adelaide Hills, which I love so much, so I’m excited about what lies ahead.
