Shipping containers have become a cost-effective alternative for small businesses looking to capitalise upon the pop-up trend.
Many Canberrans enjoyed the concept at Westside at Acton Park where designers and food and beverage providers injected a new buzz into the west basin precinct.
Two of those containers have now been relocated to Stromlo Forest Park and need new operators to provide hospitality or other services.
Nick Cotis of Raine & Horne Commercial says the ACT government is seeking expressions of interest from operators with a vision for businesses that could complement the park’s recreational focus.
“The park has a strong focus on two-wheeled recreational activities and the opportunities might suit bike hire, perhaps a refreshment kiosk – the government wants to hear from people with innovative ideas,” he says.
“There are two containers connected by a shared shaded area. One person could run both or there could be two separate businesses.”
Cotis says the containers are in location; one has a partial fit-out and there are power, water and service connections. Landscaping is being done.
“There’s great potential for seven-day trading to take advantage of the nearly 34,000 people who actively use the park and some 160,000 who visit it annually,” he says.
The area is patrolled by after-hours security and has CCTV surveillance.
