Sick of people? A remote Scottish lighthouse could be yours for a song

If neighbours are getting you down, pack your bags and escape to Scotland where one of the world’s most isolated properties awaits. 

A Victorian lighthouse is for sale in the Shetland Islands – the most remote region in the UK. 

Shetland is a tiny scattering of islands in the freezing waters of the North Sea. 

Just a few thousand people live on the archipelago, which is closer to Norway than mainland Britain. 

The nearest major city is a 14-hour boat trip away through the open ocean.

Bressay Lighthouse recently hit the market on the island of Bressay in south-eastern Shetland. 

It’s a picturesque 19th-century complex of whitewashed cottages originally built by David and Thomas Stevenson – the most prominent lighthouse engineers of their day. 

Thomas Stevenson was the father of famed author Robert Louis Stevenson, who wrote Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. 

Bressay Lighthouse is listed for offers over £350,000 ($729,000). 

For that sum, you get the original lighthouse tower, the old lighthouse keeper’s cottage, and two additional stone houses. 

The entire complex is perched dramatically on a clifftop just a few metres above the surging waves.

Inside, the cottages are in need of renovation. Patches of damp can be seen on some walls, and one of the kitchens is missing. 

However, all the essential plumbing, heating and electric wiring has been completed. 

For the past thirty years, the lighthouse was owned by the Shetland Amenity Trust, who rented out the cottages for holiday accommodation and artist retreats. 

The Trust has decided to sell the property to a new owner. 

“While it’s been a difficult decision to part with the building, we believe this is the right moment to invite new energy and investment to help it thrive again,” Alison Moncrieff, chair of the Board of Trustees, said in a statement. 

“Rising costs and financial pressures mean the Trust is no longer able to care for the lighthouse in the way it deserves, but we are excited by the possibilities that lie ahead.”
