Sleep in a giant yoga ball for $401,000

A studio flat in England with one of the world’s weirdest beds could be yours for a smidge over $400,000. 

At first glance, it’s hard to spot what sets the property in Newcastle upon Tyne apart from others in the industrial northern city. 

But step into the kitchen and everything suddenly makes sense. 

A mysterious blue shape is hanging from a beam in the ceiling by a series of metal cords.

With its bulbous dome-shaped front, the structure looks like a cross between a spaceship and a giant yoga ball. 

Believe it or not, this is actually where the residents sleep. 

Inside the pod is a mattress surrounded by a cocoon of timber battens. 

A perspex door separates the “bespoke bed” from the dining room.

The floating bedroom is the creation of British architect Henry Amos who specialises in sculpture and installation art. 

Amos describes it as an “innovative suspended sleeping pod in a listed building fit-out overlooking Newcastle Quayside”. 

Unfortunately for the sellers, the artsy feature does not appear to have successfully lured buyers.

The Akenside Hill flat first hit the market in 2023 with an asking price of £230,000 ($463,000). 

In 2024, the price was slashed to £210,000 ($423,000), before being reduced again to £199,000 ($401,000) in October this year. 

For context, the median unit price in Newcastle upon Tyne is £152,902 ($308,329).
